About Speed Converter

Speed Converter swaps between kilometers per hour, miles per hour, knots (nautical miles per hour), meters per second, feet per second, and Mach 1 (at sea level, 15 °C). Useful for translating car speed limits across km/h and mph boundaries, decoding aviation readouts where knots dominate, and physics homework in m/s. The conversion uses standard linear factors; Mach is approximated at 340.3 m/s (speed of sound at sea level, 15 °C). Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Best for

  • Translating km/h speed limits to mph when driving across a border
  • Decoding aviation readouts where speeds are in knots
  • Physics and engineering that use m/s as the SI standard

Pros

  • +km/h ⇄ mph ⇄ knots ⇄ m/s ⇄ ft/s ⇄ Mach, all at once
  • +Mach factor uses standard speed-of-sound at sea level
  • +Local JavaScript only; no signup, no uploads, works offline

Cons

  • −Mach conversion ignores local air temperature variations
  • −No acceleration (m/s²); use unit_accel for that

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a knot the same as a nautical mile per hour?
Yes. 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.852 km/h. The panel labels them identically so speed readouts from aircraft and boats translate cleanly.
How does the panel handle Mach?
Mach 1 is approximated at 340.3 m/s — the speed of sound at sea level, 15 °C. The actual speed of sound varies with air temperature and density; this is a useful reference number, not a precise local figure.
Why isn't there a 'miles per gallon' speed/economy converter?
Miles per gallon is fuel economy (length per volume), not speed. The Volume and Length converters handle those; for fuel-economy combined MPG-vs-L/100km use a dedicated economy tool.
Can I convert very small speeds (mm/s, micro m/s)?
Set the input to m/s and read off the other scales. Sub-meter-per-second values use scientific notation when below 0.001 m/s.
Are my speed inputs uploaded?
No. All factor math is local JavaScript in your browser. Speeds you type for driving, flying, or physics never leave your device.
