About Density Converter

Density Converter moves between mass-per-volume units used across science and industry: kg/m³ (SI, building materials), g/cm³ (= g/mL, chemistry and water reference), lb/ft³ (US construction and oil-specific gravity), lb/gal (US liquid density), and lb/in³ (metallurgy and small-part engineering). The tool uses the exact SI ratio 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³ and the standard 1 lb/ft³ ≈ 16.0185 kg/m³; water at 4 °C reads as 1000 kg/m³ = 1.0 g/cm³ ≈ 62.43 lb/ft³ ≈ 8.345 lb/gal. The page is static and runs offline after first load; no analytics, no signup.

Best for

  • Chemists switching between g/mL in lab references and kg/m³ in storage-tank specs
  • Civil engineers reading concrete density in lb/ft³ against SI kg/m³ design codes
  • Metallurgists comparing lb/in³ alloy densities with g/cm³ reference tables

Pros

  • +SI, US-construction and US-liquid density units on one panel
  • +Water reference (1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³) reads correctly across all units
  • +Static page — offline after first load; no analytics on inputs

Cons

  • −Specific gravity (unitless, relative to a reference) is not its own unit here
  • −No temperature correction — densities shift with thermal expansion

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 1 g/cm³ the same as 1000 kg/m³?
The two unit-systems agree: 1 g = 10⁻³ kg and 1 cm³ = 10⁻⁶ m³, so 1 g/cm³ = (10⁻³ kg) ÷ (10⁻⁶ m³) = 1000 kg/m³. Water at 4 °C is the natural reference — its density is 1.000 g/cm³.
How do I convert lb/ft³ to kg/m³?
1 lb/ft³ ≈ 16.0185 kg/m³. Concrete typically lists at 150 lb/ft³ in US references, which is 2402 kg/m³. The tool applies the standard conversion factor automatically.
What is the difference between specific gravity and density?
Density has units (mass per volume); specific gravity is the density ratio to a reference — water for liquids/solids, air for gases — and is unitless. To get density from SG, multiply by the reference density (1000 kg/m³ for water).
Does temperature affect density conversion?
Density itself changes with temperature (materials expand when heated, lowering density). The unit ratios do not — kg/m³, g/cm³ and lb/ft³ convert the same way regardless of temperature. Supply the density at the right temperature for your problem.
Are my density calculations uploaded?
No. The conversion factors are static and embedded; everything runs locally in your browser. No signup, no analytics on numeric inputs.
