About Electric Current Converter

Electric Current Converter shifts between amperes and its SI multiples (milli, micro, nano, kilo) plus the CGS electromagnetic abampere (1 abA = 10 A). The panel is what an electronics technician needs when a smartphone datasheet lists standby draw in µA but a power-stat tool reports the same number in mA, when a substation relay is rated in kA but the breaker handle shows A, or when an old physics text quotes currents in abampere. The conversion factors are exact SI prefixes; the abampere uses the standard 10:1 ratio. Static page, runs offline after first load.

Best for

  • Embedded developers reconciling µA sleep-current specs with mA readings on a meter
  • Substation engineers moving between kA fault ratings and A-scale relay settings
  • Physics students reading older CGS textbooks that quote abampere

Pros

  • +SI multiples (A, mA, µA, nA, kA) plus CGS abampere on one panel
  • +Exact SI prefix scaling; abampere at the standard 1 abA = 10 A
  • +Runs offline once loaded; nothing entered leaves the device

Cons

  • −Does not include biot or statampere (electrostatic CGS units)
  • −No RMS or peak conversion — this is a pure unit scaler, not a waveform tool

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the relationship between ampere and milliampere?
1 A = 1000 mA, 1 mA = 0.001 A. Phone battery chips often list standby current in µA (1 mA = 1000 µA). The tool moves across A, mA, µA, nA and kA with one input.
Why does the old CGS textbook use abampere?
The CGS electromagnetic system (abA, abV, etc.) predated SI; 1 abampere = 10 amperes exactly. Physics texts before ~1960 sometimes use it, and certain electromagnetism derivations still cite current in CGS for dimensional clarity.
Can I convert amps to watts or volts?
No — current is its own quantity. Watts = volts × amps (× power factor for AC), so power and voltage need their own tool after you supply the missing variables.
Does this handle RMS versus DC current?
No, this is a unit scaler. If your measurement was taken as RMS-averaged AC, the numeric value just is the value; the tool does not derive peak or DC equivalents.
Is my current calculation uploaded?
Never. The conversion factors are static and embedded; everything runs locally in your browser via JavaScript.
