About Data Storage Converter

Data Storage Converter swaps between binary (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB — powers of 1024) and decimal (KB, MB, GB, TB — powers of 1000) data units, plus bits for network bandwidth. Crucial when a hard-drive is sold in decimal GB (10⁹ bytes) but reports as binary GiB (2³⁰ bytes) in your OS, leaving you wondering where the missing space went. Also useful for cache sizes, packet sizes, and disk-vs-bus bandwidth quotes. All factors are full precision; runs locally in your browser.

Best for

  • Hard-drive capacity cross-check between manufacturer (decimal) and OS (binary)
  • Bandwidth quotes in megabits per second vs download speed in megabytes
  • Memory sizes mixing KB, KiB, MB, MiB across documentation

Pros

  • +Binary (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) and decimal (KB, MB, GB, TB) side by side
  • +Bits ↔ bytes with the ×8 factor clearly labeled
  • +Local JavaScript only; no signup, no uploads, works offline

Cons

  • −Doesn't convert rates (MB/s vs Mbps) automatically — use bits-vs-bytes ratio
  • −No decimal-place rounding control — pick the unit closest to your value

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my 500 GB drive show only 465 GB in my OS?
Drive sellers use decimal gigabytes (10⁹ bytes); operating systems historically report binary gigabytes (2³⁰ bytes). 500 decimal GB = 465.66 binary GiB. The missing '35 GB' is the unit mismatch the panel exposes.
What's the difference between KB and KiB?
KB is 1000 bytes (decimal); KiB is 1024 bytes (binary). The IEC introduced KiB, MiB, GiB etc. precisely to remove this confusion. Many tools still label binary values with KB — the panel shows both so you know what you're looking at.
How many megabits in a megabyte?
8 megabits = 1 megabyte. A 100 Mbps (megabits per second) internet link peaks at 12.5 MB/s downloads — the ×8 factor is the only conversion here.
Does it handle TB and TiB?
Yes. 1 TB = 1000⁴ bytes; 1 TiB = 1024⁴ bytes ≈ 1.0995 TB. Backup and storage sizing routinely confuse the two; the panel shows them side by side.
Are my storage numbers uploaded?
Never. Conversion runs as local JavaScript. Drive sizes, bandwidth quotes, and config numbers stay on your device.
