About Illuminance Converter

Illuminance Converter swaps between lux (lx, lumen/m²), foot-candle (lm/ft²), phot (lm/cm²), and nox (millilux). Useful for lighting design translating US foot-candle specs into lux for European projects, daylight factor calculations, street-lighting standards, and grow-light intensity for houseplants. Full-precision factors; runs locally; nothing leaves your device.

Best for

  • Lighting design translating US foot-candle specifications to lux
  • Daylight factor and LEED daylight credit calculations
  • Indoor garden lighting where grow-light specs are usually in lux

Pros

  • +lux, foot-candle, phot, nox all in one panel
  • +Foot-candle × 10.764 → lux factor handled precisely
  • +Local JavaScript only; no signup, no uploads, works offline

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between lux and foot-candle?
1 foot-candle = 10.764 lux. Both measure illuminance (light arriving on a surface); ft-candle uses imperial, lux uses SI. IESNA recommendation '30 fc' translates to 323 lx — a common office-minimum reading.
When would I use a phot?
Phot = 1 lumen/cm² = 10,000 lux. Old CGS unit; some legacy lighting design and astronomy still quote it. Converting to lux is × 10,000.
What is nox?
Nox = 1 millilux = 0.001 lux. Used in astronomy, night-vision goggle calibration, and road-lighting-spec lower thresholds where illuminance is below 1 lux.
How many lux is full daylight?
Open-sky full daylight is roughly 10,000–25,000 lx; office worksurface recommended 300–500 lx; moonlit night 0.05–0.1 lx.
Are my illumination inputs uploaded?
Never. Conversion runs entirely in your browser. Lighting design values stay private.
