About Data Transfer Rate Converter

Data Transfer Rate Converter untangles bits and bytes — a frequent source of confusion because ISPs quote speeds in Mbps (megabits per second) while file sizes are in MB (megabytes). The tool converts between bit/s, kbit/s, Mbit/s (Mbps), Gbit/s (Gbps), Tbit/s, and the byte counterparts B/s, kB/s, MB/s, GB/s using the 1 byte = 8 bits ratio and decimal SI prefixes (1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bit/s by default). It also lists KiB/s and MiB/s binary variants so legacy storage tools still parse correctly. The 8× bit-to-byte jump is displayed prominently so an 800 Mbps link reads as 100 MB/s with no manual math. Static page, runs offline.

Best for

  • Estimating download time when the ISP lists speed in Mbps and the file size in MB
  • Reading storage benchmark tools that mix binary MB/s with decimal Mb/s
  • Networking homework comparing T1, fibre, and 5G rates on one axis

Pros

  • +Bits-per-second and bytes-per-second families, side by side
  • +Both decimal SI (1 Mbps = 10⁶ bit/s) and binary KiB/MiB variants supported
  • +Offline after first load; no signup, no analytics on inputs

Cons

  • −Cannot account for protocol overhead — a 1 Gbps Ethernet link carries ~940 Mbps of payload
  • −Doesn't simulate throughput vs bandwidth — pure unit conversion only

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my 100 Mbps internet download at 12 MB/s, not 100?
Mbps = megabits, MB/s = megabytes. 1 byte = 8 bits, so 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s theoretical max. Real-world overhead (TCP/IP, Wi-Fi retransmits) trims that a bit, which is why a 100 Mbps connection peaks around 11–12 MB/s.
Is 1 Mbps 1,000,000 bit/s or 1,048,576 bit/s?
Networking uses decimal SI prefixes by industry convention: 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bit/s. Storage sometimes uses binary MiB/Mb (1 MiB = 2²⁰ bytes). Our tool labels both clearly: decimal units by default, with KiB/s and MiB/s available as binary variants.
How do I convert Mbps to GB/s?
Mbps → GB/s requires two steps: divide by 8 (bits to bytes) and divide by 1000 (megabytes to gigabytes). 1000 Mbps = 0.125 GB/s. The tool applies this automatically in one pick.
Why does my Wi-Fi 6 router list 1200 Mbps but real transfers are slower?
1200 Mbps is the PHY rate under ideal interference-free conditions. Shared-bandwidth, overhead, signal attenuation, and protocol negotiation typically deliver 60–70% of PHY in practice — closer to 700–800 Mbps on the wire.
Are my speed calculations uploaded?
No. Conversion uses static factors; everything runs as local JavaScript in your browser, offline-ready, no signup.
