About Extract ZIP

Extract ZIP lists the contents of a .zip archive in your browser and lets you download any individual file from it without installing anything. Built on a pure-JavaScript inflate implementation, the tool handles the legacy PKZIP format including stored (no compression), DEFLATE, and 64-bit ZIP extensions. Useful for opening a download without polluting a corporate laptop with extractor installers, pulling one file from a 5-GB bundle without downloading all of it first, or previewing a colleague's zipped project before deciding which parts you need. Files are decoded in memory and offered as individual downloads; nothing is uploaded.

Best for

  • Workstation users on a locked-down machine who can't install an archive extractor
  • Anyone wanting one file from a large ZIP without unpacking the whole bundle
  • Previewing a colleague's zipped submission before deciding what to grab

Pros

  • +Real pure-JS inflate — no install, no admin, runs on locked-down corporate laptops
  • +Choose individual files to extract; you don't have to unpack the whole archive
  • +Handles stored, DEFLATE, and 64-bit ZIP extensions; totally offline

Cons

  • −Password-protected ZIPs (ZipCrypto or AES) cannot be decrypted in this version
  • −Very large zipped videos still demand the full file in memory to extract a member

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extract a password-protected ZIP?
Not in the current build. Encrypted ZIP archives (ZipCrypto or the newer AES variant) need a decryption step that exposes the prompt UI; we're adding AES-256-ZIP support in a future release. For now, the tool refuses the archive gracefully and we'll log the error on the page.
Do I have to download the whole ZIP to extract?
Yes — browsers fetch the entire file before we can index its central directory. Once loaded, the tool reads the central directory from the end of the file and lets you pick member files individually; only members you select are decoded and downloaded.
Why does extracting one file take a few seconds on a 2-GB zip?
The browser has to hold the file in memory, then the JS inflate walks the central directory, seeks the byte range of your requested member, and decompresses it. The first extract is slower; subsequent picks re-use the already-parsed directory and are near-instant.
What about ZIP64 extensions for archives over 4 GB?
Supported. The tool detects the ZIP64 markers in the end-of-central-directory record and uses the extended offsets. The cap is your device's RAM, not the format's spec limit.
Is the archive uploaded to a server?
No. The inflate implementation runs in your browser; nothing leaves your device. Confidential archives, client zips, exported-DB backups all stay local.
