ZIP is the most universally unpackable container — every Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS device opens .zip out of the box — so it's the safest choice for sharing, archiving a project deliverable, or attaching many files in one email. The tool supports setting a custom archive name and offers no-compression store mode for already-compressed files like MP4 or JPG. Everything runs locally; your files never go to a server. Cap is your device's RAM, which usually means tens of GB before it struggles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ZIP the same as 7z or RAR?
Different containers and compression algorithms. ZIP stores orientation in a small footer, no special unpacker needed. 7z and RAR use newer algorithms (LZMA2 and proprietary RAR) that usually produce smaller archives but require 7-Zip or WinRAR (RAR) to open. For cross-platform share-ability, ZIP is the safest pick.
Does the ZIP compress or store?
Both — the tool defaults to DEFLATE compression. For already-compressed inputs (videos, JPGs, MP3s) where compression gains nothing, switch the option to store mode and the archive is built faster with no re-compression.
Can I add a password to my ZIP?
Not in this version. ZIP password encryption (ZipCrypto or AES) is supported by 7-Zip's Create 7Z tool which can also save as ZIP-AES. We're exposing PKZIP-style ZipCrypto in a future release; for now, encrypt with a separate tool or use 7Z-AES.
Why is my 4 GB video barely smaller after zipping?
Videos and JPGs are already compressed. DEFLATE running over them again finds almost no redundancy. If you only have media in the bundle, choose store mode — your archive builds near-instantly with no wasted compression effort.
Are my files uploaded when making the ZIP?
No. The DEFLATE encoder runs as in-browser JavaScript; nothing leaves your device. Confidential files, unreleased client work, source code — all stay local.
