About Extract RAR

Extract RAR decompresses RAR4 and RAR5 archives in your browser, no WinRAR install required. Built on a WebAssembly port of the open-source unar decoder, it lists every member of the archive and lets you download any or all of them. Particularly handy on locked-down corporate laptops without admin rights, on macOS where WinRAR isn't standard, or on Linux where the unrar binary isn't always in the package manager. Password-protected RAR5 archives (AES-256) are supported — supply the password when prompted; the key and decryption run locally and never leave the device.

Best for

  • Opening .rar attachments on a locked-down work laptop without WinRAR installed
  • macOS / Linux users receiving RAR5 archives without a pre-installed extractor
  • Anyone extracting a member file from a large RAR without unpacking the whole archive

Pros

  • +RAR4 and RAR5 supported — covers legacy WinRAR archives and modern RAR5
  • +No install — works on locked-down corporate laptops and macOS without WinRAR
  • +Password-protected RAR5 (AES-256) supported locally; the key never leaves your device

Cons

  • −Decoding a 10-GB RAR takes minutes and is RAM-bound on phones
  • −(RAR-format encoders are restricted by the format license, but readers are open-source)

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between RAR4 and RAR5?
RAR5 (default since WinRAR 5 in 2013) supports larger dictionaries, AES-256 encryption (RAR4 used the older proprietary cipher), and better recovery records. Most modern RARs are RAR5; legacy RAR4 archives from the 2000s also decrypt cleanly here.
Can I extract a password-protected RAR?
Yes — RAR5's AES-256 is supported and runs locally. Enter the password at the prompt; the decryption key never leaves your device. RAR4-style passwords are also supported when the source archive is older.
Why is it slow on a multi-GB RAR?
RAR decoding is CPU-heavy and the file needs to be in memory; the WASM decoder does the work in chunks. A 10-GB archive can take several minutes on a phone with 4 GB RAM; laptops usually do it in 1–2 minutes.
Can I extract just one file from a RAR?
Yes — the tool lists every archive member with size and date. Pick the ones you want and only those get decoded and downloaded. Browsing RAR's internal directory structure is supported (sub-folder paths are displayed).
Are my archives uploaded anywhere?
No. The decoder runs as WebAssembly in your browser. RAR decryption keys, confidential archives, and downloaded members all stay on your device the entire time.
