About Image to Text

Image to Text runs OCR (optical character recognition) on JPG, PNG, HEIC, and other image files entirely in your browser using Tesseract and the browser's TextDetector API. It recognizes printed text in dozens of Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, CJK, and Indic scripts and returns editable text you can copy. Common uses include pulling a phone number off a flyer, the tracking number off a delivery photo, or the model number off an appliance plate. Because OCR runs locally in your browser, sensitive documents like medical discharge papers or financial statements never leave your device.

Best for

  • Reading a phone number, address, or tracking code from a photo
  • Digitizing a printed recipe, magazine clipping, or handbook page
  • Recovering text from screenshots of apps that don't allow copy

Pros

  • +Dozens of Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, CJK and Indic scripts recognized
  • +Output is plain editable text — copy straight into your notes
  • +OCR runs locally in the browser — sensitive scans stay private

Cons

  • −Handwriting is not reliably recognized (use printed text for best results)
  • −Photos with low contrast, skew, or busy backgrounds need pre-cropping

Frequently Asked Questions

Which languages does the OCR support?
Tesseract covers 100+ languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The browser-side TextDetector API adds script auto-detection where supported.
Does it recognize handwriting?
Not reliably. Tesseract is tuned for printed text. Cursive and handwriting produce poor results; for handwritten notes use a dedicated handwriting-OCR service or retype manually.
How can I improve recognition on a poor photo?
Crop the photo to the text area first, raise contrast, and straighten any skew. A clean screenshot of a printed page usually hits 99% accuracy; a tilted phone photo of glossy paper needs cleanup before OCR works well.
Is there an image size limit?
There is no fixed cap, but high-resolution images of 30 MP and above use a lot of RAM on phones with 2 GB. Crop to the text region first if you only need one block of text.
Are my private images uploaded during OCR?
Never. Tesseract and the browser's TextDetector run inside the browser sandbox. Medical documents, financial statements, and ID scans are read on-device and never sent anywhere.
