About Base64 Encoder/Decoder

Base64 Encoder/Decoder converts between raw text (UTF-8 or binary) and Base64 strings with a single click. Encode an image filename for safe embedding in a JSON or YAML config, decode a base64 payload from a webhook response, or inspect a Data URL before pasting it into a test. The conversion is done entirely in the browser via JavaScript's built-in btoa/atob plus a UTF-8 shim — nothing is uploaded, so secrets in tokens or JSON stay on your device.

Best for

  • Decoding Stripe webhook signatures or JWT payloads in a hurry
  • Building Data URLs for inline image previews in HTML or CSS
  • Encoding unicode strings safely for transport in JSON or YAML

Pros

  • +One-click encode and decode in either direction
  • +UTF-8 aware by default so non-ASCII characters don't break
  • +Local btoa/atop — API keys and JWT payloads never leave your browser

Cons

  • −Base64 is not encryption — anyone can decode it; never treat it as encryption
  • −Very large inputs (multi-MB) can slow the browser tab briefly

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Base64 the same as encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption — anyone with the string can decode it back to its original form in milliseconds. Never put secrets over the wire hoping Base64 will hide them; use TLS plus actual encryption for any sensitive data.
Why do my Turkish or emoji characters break in plain btoa?
Standard btoa only handles Latin1; non-ASCII chars throw. This tool runs a UTF-8 conversion before btoa, so emoji and accented letters encode cleanly and round-trip back without corruption.
Can I encode a file (PDF or image) as base64?
Yes — drop a binary file and the tool reads it as bytes and encodes the full blob. The output is a single Base64 string you can paste into a JSON payload or use as a data URL.
What's the use of a Data URL?
A Data URL embeds a small file directly in HTML, CSS, or JSON without a separate file fetch — useful for tiny inline images in emails or single-file demos. You build one by prepending the correct mime prefix to the Base64 output of this tool.
Are my secrets uploaded when decoding?
Never. Encode/decode runs via JavaScript in your browser. API keys, JWT tokens, and webhook payloads stay on your device the whole time.
