About Hash Generator

Hash Generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512 and SHA-3 hashes from text or files entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API and a built-in SHA-3 implementation. Hashes are one-way fingerprints used to verify file integrity, detect tampering, password-derive keys, and match content for dedup. Drop a file and the tool streams it through the hasher without loading the entire file into RAM, so multi-GB videos still hash cleanly. MD5 and SHA-1 are shown for legacy compatibility (they are broken for security use) — for any security-sensitive use case, prefer SHA-256 or SHA-512. Nothing is uploaded; nothing is logged.

Best for

  • Verifying a downloaded ISO or installer matches the publisher's published hash
  • Generating a quick SHA-256 for a contract file before sharing it for signature
  • Password-derivation and content-addressing experiments — local, no env setup

Pros

  • +Multiple algorithms on one pass — MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512 and SHA3
  • +Streams large files through the hasher without loading them into RAM
  • +Web Crypto API — runs entirely in your browser, never uploads

Cons

  • −MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically broken — keep to SHA-256+ for security
  • −No HMAC support — for keyed hashes use a dedicated HMAC tool

How to use Hash Generator

  1. 1

Enter the source value, color code, or parameters in the input fields.

  2. 2

Specify conversion settings, options, or target output formats.

  3. 3

Wait for the client-side browser logic to process the files securely.

  4. 4

Copy the finalized outputs directly to your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MD5 still safe to use?
For security purposes — no. MD5 is collision-broken; attackers can craft two different files with the same MD5. Keep MD5 only for non-security tasks (etag-style dedup, legacy checksum comparisons). For any signature, integrity-of-untrusted-content, or password use, pick SHA-256 or stronger.
Why does my 4 GB video hash without freezing the browser?
The tool streams the file through the hasher in chunks instead of loading it whole into memory. Your OS hands the file handle to the browser, the browser feeds chunks into Web Crypto, the hash is computed progressively, and RAM stays flat.
Can two files have the same hash?
In principle yes (a hash is fixed-size, so collisions must exist); in practice, finding one for SHA-256 takes astronomical amounts of compute. For SHA-256 and SHA-512, accidental and intentional collisions are not a practical concern.
What's the difference between SHA-256 and SHA3-256?
Different algorithms. SHA-256 is part of the SHA-2 family (NIST, 2001). SHA-3 (Keccak) was standardised in 2015 as a structurally different backup. Both are secure; SHA-256 has wider ecosystem support, SHA-3 has a clean design that some crypto systems prefer.
Are my files uploaded during hashing?
No. The Web Crypto API runs entirely in your browser sandbox; nothing leaves your device. Confidential documents, encryption keys, and unreleased firmware all stay local.
