About Color Name Finder

Color Name Finder takes a digital color (HEX, RGB, or HSL) and returns the nearest named color from a curated dictionary of CSS named colors, X11 colors, traditional artist color names (e.g. teal, burnt sienna, mauve, cobalt), and common paint references. The matching uses Delta-E2000 in the CIELAB perceptual space, so the result is the closest human-readable name rather than just the closest sRGB triple. Useful for accessibility audits that need a colour name for screen-reader text, for designers turning a client swatch into a documented token ("primary brand is Teal-Petrol" instead of `#0F6B68`), and for casually answering "what color is this?" when reading a screenshot.

Best for

  • Accessibility writers attaching human-readable color names to chart legends
  • Designers turning a hex into a documented design-token name
  • Anyone asking "what color is this screenshot pixel" without hand-picking swatches

Pros

  • +Matches against CSS named colors, X11, and artist color names (mauve, cobalt, etc.)
  • +Delta-E2000 in CIELAB — perceptually nearest, not just nearest sRGB triple
  • +Static page; nothing leaves your device

Cons

  • −Dictionary borders are subjective — borderline cases get the nearest reasonable match
  • −No Pantone/HKS/RAL output here; use the RAL/HKS Finder for spot-color codes

Frequently Asked Questions

What color dictionary does the tool draw from?
A combination of CSS named colors (web safe), X11 names used by Unix GUIs, common artist names like mauve, cobalt and burnt sienna, plus curated supplemental mappings. The combined dictionary covers most real-world hexes with a recognizable name.
Why are two similar hexes named differently sometimes?
Color-name boundaries aren't mathematically sharp. Two hexes can sit on opposite sides of a perceptual border (cyan/turquoise, mauve/lilac, navy/midnight blue) and land on different names. The tool returns the nearest reasonable match with its delta-E distance so the borderline is visible.
Can the tool name a Pantone-equivalent color?
No — Pantone libraries are licensed and not bundled. Use RAL/HKS Finder for the nearest spot-color codes; this tool focuses on lay-friendly and CSS color names.
Is the matching perceptually or numerically nearest?
Perceptually. The tool computes Delta-E2000 in CIE L*a*b* colour space — the same metric proofing and printing suites use — so the nearest match is what the eye would pick, not just the closest sRGB triple.
Is my color value uploaded?
Never. The dictionary and matching math run as local JavaScript in your browser. Brand hex codes, client palette values, and screenshot picks all stay on your device.
