About MOD
MOD
MOD is a video file format used by some JVC, Canon, and Panasonic camcorders. Internally MOD is essentially an MPEG-2 Program Stream file with AC-3 audio, but the .mod extension was used by the camcorder manufacturers. MOD files can usually be renamed to .mpg and played in standard MPEG-2 players.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a MOD file?▼
MOD is the video format used by older JVC, Panasonic, and Canon camcorders. Internally it is essentially MPEG-2 video in a program stream, with a .mod extension those cameras used.
Why convert MOD to MP4?▼
The MOD extension confuses most apps and players. Converting to MP4 takes the same MPEG-2 video and puts it in a container that every device opens.
Is MOD still used?▼
Practically never for new recordings — the camcorder era has moved on. Existing MOD libraries still benefit from conversion to MP4 for modern playback.
Does converting MOD lose quality?▼
Remuxing keeps the original MPEG-2 streams intact with no loss. Re-encoding to H.264 MP4 reduces file size with typically invisible loss at a sensible bitrate.
Are my camcorder videos uploaded during conversion?▼
No — conversion happens locally in your browser.
